Fighting Oil Spills with Innovation: Inobiostar

We’re excited to share that Inobiostar has been awarded a €2.3 million grant from the EIC Accelerator, the EU’s premier funding programme for breakthrough innovations. This support will help them scale up InnoAerogel, a lightweight, biodegradable material designed to clean up oil spills quickly, safely, and sustainably.

InnoAerogel is made from recycled paper waste, but don’t let that fool you. It’s a high-performance aerogel that can absorb oil while repelling water, making it ideal for cleaning up oil-contaminated coastlines and waterways.

What sets it apart is its built-in oil-degrading microbes, which speed up the natural breakdown of pollutants. It’s light enough to deploy quickly, strong enough to absorb up to 50 times its own weight in fuel, and reusable up to five times. And because it’s biodegradable, it doesn’t create more waste in the process.

All of this adds up to a game-changing tool for emergency response teams, environmental agencies, and any organisation that needs to respond to oil spills quickly and effectively without harming the planet in the process. With EIC funding, Inobiostar will ramp up production, test performance in the field, and prepare for a wider commercial launch. This is a major step forward for both the company and for the broader effort to make environmental protection smarter and more sustainable.
